Poker champion's riches challenged

The newly crowned World Series of Poker champion has found himself in another heads-up competition, only this time the venue is the Regional Justice Center and the stakes are half of his main event prize money.

A British television producer now living in Los Angeles has sued Jamie Gold in Clark County District Court, saying the winner of the World Series of Poker's signature event had failed to live up to an agreement to split any winnings.

Students of Texas Hold 'em poker can learn in city course

It's poker, minus the smoke-filled rooms and wads of cash.

Yeah, you actually can play it that way.

Lawrence's Parks and Recreation Department is set to prove it next week. The city department on Tuesday will begin offering its first class on how to play Texas Hold 'em poker, the game that has invaded the television airwaves and made ordinary Joes into millionaires through events like the World Series of Poker.

Hog heaven - Poker Run grows from small Keys ride to huge South Florida event

When the Florida Keys' biggest motorcycle poker run heads south this weekend, event founder Phil Peterson will be coming back to where it all started for his family business.

Peterson, a Wisconsin native, opened his first motorcycle shop in a wooden building on Key West's Caroline Street in 1954.

Now, more than a half-century later, Peterson's Harley-Davidson of Miami operates two large dealerships in Miami-Dade.

Poker runs are illegal in Texas

Poker runs like the one that led recently to five boat crash deaths at Lake Texoma apparently are illegal under Texas law.

The events' legality in Oklahoma hasn't been settled.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott ruled in December that such events -- even those used as charitable fund-raisers -- violate the state's gambling laws.

A spokesman for Abbott said Friday it would be up to Grayson County District Attorney Joe D. Brown to decide whether to file charges over the "Highroller Poker Run" at Texoma. Brown didn't return phone messages Friday.

The event, organized at a marina at Pottsboro, Texas, drew about 55 participants who paid $500 each. The Oklahoman was unable to determine whether the event benefited a charity.
